About the Jacmel United Football Club
Founded in the Fall of
2011 by Diane Metcalf-Leggette, the Jacmel United Football Club
(JUFC) strives to change the lives of impoverished children
through the means of the beautiful game of soccer. JUFC is a structured
soccer league for children ages 5-17 living in Jacmel, Haiti. We
currently have 20 teams and over 300 players in the league with
new kids coming to our practices every week asking to tryout.
Our playing conditions
are rugged and the poverty is prevalent, but that has not deterred
the kids' enthusiasm. The children arrive early, anxious to play.
Many are barefoot or with worn shoes. Most of the children eat only
one meal that day. Yet these kids step onto the playing field, a
small uneven patch of land covered mostly in dirt and rocks, and
come alive! Their sheer joy in playing soccer and their passion
for the game reverberate.
Using the children's love
for soccer, JUFC teaches them the importance of looking beyond the
net. The players learn qualities such as discipline, leadership,
teamwork, dedication, and citizenship. By using the skills they
develop in the league, they are able to grow into individuals who
find success on and off the field.
With your help, we
can continue to offer these children the joy of soccer. Please visit
our Donations and Sponsorships Page to
learn more about opportunities to sponsor a player or team or to
help us with our field fund.
Education is a cornerstone
of the Jacmel United Football Club and Goals Beyond The Net (GBTN).
It is through education that opportunities are created. We require
that each player be enrolled in school and achieve good grades.
Children that are unable to attend school for financial reasons
are sponsored by GBTN. Players are required to submit their report
cards to their coaches for review.
